WASHINGTON — Georgetown parted ways with head basketball coach John Thompson III, the school announced Thursday.
The university said in a statement that it would “no longer be retaining his services.”
“For thirteen years, he has been one of the elite coaches in college basketball,” the school said in a statement. “His performance as a coach has been exceptional, and he has served our community with remarkable distinction and integrity, sustaining our commitment to the academic performance of our students and providing them with the very best preparation for their lives beyond the Hilltop.”
Thompson, the son of legendary Hoyas coach John Thompson, Jr., had been with Georgetown since the 2004-05 season following a four-year stint at Princeton. The Hoyas went 278-151 during his tenure, including eight trips to the NCAA Tournament and a Final Four appearance in 2007. But the team went just 29-36 over the past two years, missing the postseason both times.
Thompson also released a statement Thursday afternoon.
“I am proud of what my players have accomplished on the court and how they are thriving since leaving Georgetown,” he said. “I am grateful to the fans of Georgetown for their tremendous support. Georgetown Basketball has been a part of my life since 1972, which makes this moment even more impactful but I look forward to my next chapter.”
