Ozzie, the bald eagle, dies

WASHINGTON — There’s some sad news in the bald eagle community. Ozzie, the famous bald eagle, died, according to the Center for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) on Sanibel Island, Florida.

For more than 20 years, Ozzie has been seen with his mate Harriet on an eagle camera in Southwest Florida.

The two eagles have been raising chicks for years.

Since 2012, a 24-hour live stream of Ozzie and Harriet’s nest attracted more than 40 million views, making the couple an Internet sensation.

Earlier this year, Ozzie was seriously injured after being struck by a car.

Ozzie was brought to the clinic Sunday after likely being hurt in a fight with another bird. Vets worked for hours to save the bird, but were not successful.

CROW wrote on its Facebook page:

“Ozzie passed away last night at CROW due to complications from his recent injuries that included multiple severe lacerations and a broken toe in each foot,” the post reads. “It is highly likely these injuries were sustained from a fight with another bald eagle near the nest that was documented on the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam Facebook page. It was also reported that he had been entangled in barbwire.”

A necropsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

Ozzie’s death is one that has people posting comments on social media.

“It is with heavy hearts, we share the news that Ozzie passed away last evening. It was a gift to observe his and Harriet’s bond over the last three seasons and we will remember his dedication, commitment and love for many years to come. Fly High & Free Ozzie. The SWFL Eagle Cam Community will remember & cherish you alwaysm” the Southwest Florida Eagle Cam writes on its Facebook page.

Hundreds have posted comments on a condolences chat page set up for Ozzie.
