Former Marine from N. Va. killed in Libya attack

WASHINGTON — A northern Virginia security contractor is the American killed in the terrorist attack in Libya on Tuesday. He leaves behind a wife and four children.

A security contractor working for Fredericksburg-based Crucible, David Berry was among the 10 people killed when a gunman opened fire in a luxury hotel in Tripoli.

Crucible CEO Cliff Taylor says Berry was the victim of the terrorist attack at the Corinthia Hotel.

In his written statement Taylor says, “Our company mourns this extraordinary loss with his family and friends.”

Taylor declined to provide any more information about Berry, citing security concerns.

Berry’s LinkedIn page indicates that he was Crucible’s project security manager in Tripoli, Libya. He began work last July as site manager of security and was apparently promoted just last month to his current position.

Crucible is a company that provides security and training for individuals who live and work in dangerous places. Its clients include the U.S. government, international aid organizations and corporations.

Berry was a combat veteran who served 12 years in the Marines. His service experience includes special operations and intelligence.

Barry Harkins of San Diego established a gofundme.com page to raise money for Berry’s survivors with the goal of raising $10,000.

Harkins served in combat with David Berry in the Marines and considers him a mentor.

“Dave was a phenomenal Marine, first and foremost, he did amazing work during his time in Marine Special Operations Command.”

“We really just want to take care of Dave and his family.”
