Rare Prince song released from the vaults

WASHINGTON — Two years after music legend Prince’s untimely death, his estate has released a rare recording of the genre-defying musician’s original take on a song that would go on to be a massive hit for another artist.

Prince originally wrote and recorded “Nothing Compares 2 U” in 1984 for a band he had assembled called “The Family.” But the song stayed buried in the vaults until pop singer Sinead O’Connor recorded her version in 1990, which went on to be a smash hit.

Prince’s estate released the song and an accompanying video on YouTube on Thursday. The video contains previously unseen rehearsal footage of Prince from 1984, around the time he recorded the track.

Prince had occasionally performed the song live but the produced demo had never been released.

Prince was reportedly not a big fan of O’Connor’s take on the song.
