WASHINGTON — A Silver Spring, Maryland, man convicted in the 2016 murder of his pregnant fiancee will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Thierry Nkusu, 35, was sentenced this month to life in prison without the possibility of parole, which is the maximum sentence for first-degree murder in Maryland.
He was found guilty in a two-week trial by jury in April.
In April 2016, Takoma Park police arrived at what was first reported as a double stabbing in the 670 block of Houston Avenue.
Officers found Nkusu with minor injuries near an elevator of the apartment building and they found his pregnant fiancee, 36-year-old Maria Mbunga, dead inside her apartment with multiple stab wounds, court documents said.
Investigators said that although Nkusu had superficial injuries, he claimed to have suffered memory loss during what he said was an attack from an unknown assailant.
As the investigation into Mbunga’s killing continued, friends told police that Nkusu said on multiple occasions that he would not take responsibility for the child he was having with Mbunga.
Investigators later found that Nkusu had stabbed Mbunga to death in her apartment, and that he tried to change the scene of the crime in order to hide his involvement.
Mbunga, who was around 16 weeks pregnant at the time of her death, was a school bus driver in Montgomery County.
