Amtrak train hits, kills man in Gaithersburg

WASHINGTON — An Amtrak train hit and killed a man in Gaithersburg, and the investigation caused delays on the tracks in Montgomery County Tuesday afternoon.

A man was trespassing on the tracks near S. Summit Avenue and E. Diamond Avenue in Gaithersburg, Maryland, around 2 p.m. when Train #30 hit him, said Amtrak spokesperson Beth Toll.

The train, coming from Chicago, had scheduled an emergency stop at Rockville’s station before its final destination in D.C. for a medical situation on board. On its way to the emergency stop, the train hit the pedestrian near the Gaithersburg station, said Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer.

The man hit by the train died on the scene. The patient on board the train was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Piringer said.

There were no other injuries to the train’s 76 passengers or crew members on board, Toll said.

It is not yet clear why the man was in the area near the tracks, police said. His identity will be released once his family has been notified, police added.

The train was delayed following the incident, but Amtrak did not anticipate it would cause any other delays to its afternoon or evening service, Toll said.

On MARC’s Brunswick Line, all trains experienced 20- to 30-minute delays between Rockville and Germantown. Normal service resumed around 5:30 p.m.
