WASHINGTON — After safety concerns forced some residents at a Gaithersburg, Maryland, apartment complex to temporarily move out last week, there are signs of progress that the problem is being resolved.
People who live in about 25 units at The Villages of Gaithersburg found out last week that they had to move to a hotel because a serious electrical problem meant power had to be shut off.
A generator has arrived Monday and repairs are underway. The hope is to get people back in their apartments by sometime Wednesday.
A representative for the complex told WTOP the unexpected problem was uncovered during an effort to fix a code violation. He believes water penetration weakened concrete in the basement and damaged the electrical system.
Management is paying the affected residents’ hotel bills and providing them with food.
The representative also said it was an “unfortunate situation,” and it will cost well over $100,000 to get the problem fixed quickly, but that it was the right thing to do.
