UPDATE 2/4/16 6:44 p.m.: WASHINGTON — The Montgomery County Board of Education announced Thursday evening it has conditionally appointed Jack R. Smith as the new superintendent.
EARLIER 2/4/16 1:38 p.m.: WASHINGTON — Maryland’s largest county is getting a new school superintendent.
The Montgomery County Board of Education will announce its pick to lead the school system for the next four years at a special meeting set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
One name that’s cropped up as being at the top of the list for new school chief: Jack R. Smith, currently the Maryland State interim superintendent. Smith previously worked as the school superintendent in Calvert County before moving on to the State Department of Education.
Neither MCPS nor the spokesman for the Maryland State Board of Education would confirm whether Smith is indeed the pick for Montgomery County superintendent.
The Washington Post is reporting another name has popped up at the top of the list: Marty K. Smith, currently chief of staff at Fairfax County Schools.
Montgomery County has been searching for a new superintendent since Dr. Joshua Starr announced he’d be stepping down last February. Starr left when it became clear he did not have enough votes among the members of the board of education to renew his contract.
Larry Bowers, who served as the chief operating officer at MCPS has been working as the interim school superintendent since Starr resigned.
The appointment is effective July 1, 2016, through June 30, 2020, and is contingent upon final written approval of the State Superintendent of Schools.
The Montgomery County Board of Education is expected to name its selection for superintendent at a special meeting called for Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m.
