WASHINGTON — A proposed bill would require Montgomery County single-family house sellers to test their houses for radon and disclose the results to potential buyers.
The bill, proposed by council members Craig Rice and Sidney Katz, would make sellers test for the presence of radon gas. Under current Maryland regulations, homeowners must disclose any known problems or “latent defects” to buyers. Testing for radon is not required as part of the process for selling a house.
Radon is “a naturally-occurring radioactive gas without color, odor or taste” that is known to increase the risk of lung cancer, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says.
