WASHINGTON — More than 20 people who call Montgomery County’s Leisure World home need a new place to stay after a fire ripped through a set of apartments Tuesday afternoon.
The fire started at the apartments along Glen Eagles Drive in Silver Spring at about 3 p.m. Tuesday. All occupants got out before the blaze damaged at least 12 units, says Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Spokesman Pete Piringer.
As firefighters worked to extinguish the flames, two of the firefighters suffered injuries, but they are expected to be OK, Piringer adds.
A cat did not make it out of the fire and died, he says.
Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, which started on the first floor, but say it was accidental.
Officials say the fire caused $1 million in damage.
