WASHINGTON — A 2-year-old and a 3-year-old are dead, and four others are in the hospital after a house fire Tuesday morning in St. Mary’s County, Maryland.
The fire broke out around 4:40 a.m. Tuesday at a house in the 28000 block of Point Lookout Road in Loveville. The house did not have any working smoke alarms, St. Mary’s County fire officials said. One of the adult residents discovered the fire, according to fire officials.
Firefighters responded to the one-alarm fire and took about 20 minutes to put out the flames.
The children who died were taken to the chief medical examiner’s office in Baltimore to determine cause of death. Two dogs also died in the fire, fire officials said.
Four other people were flown to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening: the adult resident who discovered the fire, an owner of the property and her two children, a 1-year-old and a 2-month-old.
Investigations are still trying to figure out what exactly caused the blaze.
