WASHINGTON — The Maryland State Police arrested two Baltimore men this weekend in connection with a roadside scam that police say has been reported with increasing frequency across the state.
This weekend, two men, 29-year old Aron Miclescu and 35-year-old Constantin Stan, were arrested and charged with criminal disorderly conduct, obstructing traffic and reckless endangerment. Police say additional charges could follow a review by the Baltimore County state’s attorney’s office.
The roadside scam involves suspects parking just off the ramp of a roadway or interstate and flagging down motorists, police say. When a driver stops to offer aid, the suspects typically ask for money, sometimes offering fake jewelry in exchange.
In one recent case, Alexandru Dumitru, 32, was arrested after police found he’d stopped drivers asking for cash — he’d reportedly told them he’d run out of gas. State police reported Dumitru’s gas tank was full.
Police said they’ve gotten reports of similar scams from counties across the state, including Montgomery, Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Allegany counties.
