WASHINGTON — A dump truck traveling eastbound on the Intercounty Connector was hit by at least one gunshot this afternoon, sending glass flying into the face of one of two men inside the truck. He was not seriously hurt.
“A gunshot came from the wooded area and struck the vehicle causing the glass to splinter,” says Lt. Kevin Ayd, public information officer of the Maryland Transportation Authority police.
The other man in the truck narrowly escaped injury.
“Some glass got in the face of one of the subjects in the vehicle, the bullet then became lodged in the clothing of the second subject in the vehicle,” Ayd says.
Police are not yet certain how many shots were fired. “We know there was at least one shot,” Ayd says.
It’s not yet clear if the vehicle was specifically targeted or struck by an errant shot. There were no other reports of gunfire along the toll highway.
Prince George’s County police are leading the investigation. They launched a search of the area and began interviewing nearby residents asking if they had seen anyone suspicious.
