WASHINGTON — Maryland Governor-elect Larry Hogan has announced the latest round of leadership appointments to his administration.
In the 10th news conference since he was elected, the Republican Hogan announced that he’s naming Steven Moyer to head the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. George Owings III will serve as secretary of veterans affairs. Al Redmer has been tapped to serve as insurance commissioner and John Wobensmith will be taking the job of secretary of state.
Hogan says he expects to make more appointments next week, and that his administration staff should be in place by the time he’s sworn in Jan. 21.
At a news conference in Annapolis, Hogan repeated his goal of addressing what he calls the state’s fiscal crisis by cutting spending. Next, he says, “we’re going to roll back as many of the 40 tax and fee increases as we can.” Hogan is referring to the increases that were passed during the tenure of Gov. Martin O’Mallley.
While Hogan says his first priority will be to “get spending under control,” he says school construction funding requests will get his full attention. When asked about reports of school overcrowding and increased numbers of portable classrooms in some jurisdictions, Hogan said: “We’re hoping to be able to afford school construction — as much as available under the current constraints. It’s an important priority for us.”
