ASHBURN, Va.– A new entertainment complex is about to open in Loudon County. Just don’t be fooled by its name.

“Topgolf is a unique experience,” said Willie Wilson, director of operations at Topgolf Loudoun.

Here’s how it works:  You hit microchip-embedded golf balls at bullseye-shaped targets for points. A computer tallies up and displays the points for you, based on how far your ball goes and how close you get it to the center of each target.

Topgolf Loudoun opens Sept. 3 in Ashburn. This is the second Topgolf location in our region. The other is in Alexandria.

The three-level complex is impressive. “It’s 65,000 square feet, 102 bays, TVs in each bay,” Wilson said.

It also has a club-like atmosphere with energetic music, and high-quality food and drinks. “We have three bars, a rooftop terrace, a lower level lounge with pool tables and shuffleboard and Xbox Kinect.  It’s flat out fun.”

During a preview Wednesday, I sampled some of the food which included a yummy Mexican sushi — yes, “Mushi”– and decadent doughnut holes that you inject with your choice of filling.

Although you will find golfers here, don’t be intimidated.

“Approximately 70 percent of the people who come in have either never played golf, or don’t know to play the game of golf,” Wilson said.  “They just come out because they hear that it’s a fun atmosphere.”

Instructors walk the tee line to provide basic help, but you can also sign up for a lesson.

Plus, every Topgolf location nationwide now has a special deal for young golfers.

“We rolled out a brand new program where high school golf teams can come and play Topgolf for free,” Wilson said.
