Volunteers needed for extreme cleanup of Rock Creek

WASHINGTON – Many are planning to volunteer next weekend along the Rock Creek to help keep the area free of trash.

It’s a 33-mile stretch of water that needs a lot of helping hands.

“It’s all the way up from the headwaters in Laytonsville all the way to where it empties into the Potomac down in Georgetown,” says Matt Fleisher, executive director of the Rock Creek Conservancy.

On April 23 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Fleisher says, they’ll likely find some interesting items.

“I think one year we found an aquarium someone had put in the creek. It actually still had fish in it,” Fleisher said.

He says litter from the street eventually makes it down to the watershed and volunteers usually pick up hundreds of garbage bags of trash each year. To date, volunteers have picked up over 15,000  garbage bags of litter. And Fleisher estimates about 900 tires.

Kids are welcome. Volunteers are asked to wear sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate clothing and sign up for a place to help along the watershed here.
