The big chill: Forecast calls for severe cold

WASHINGTON — It may not be green for long.

NBC Storm Team 4 is keeping an eye on what could be the area’s first big snow event next weekend.

While some snow flurries are expected today through the afternoon, it won’t be more than a quick spell. This will be followed by weather alert days for Monday and Tuesday, due to severe cold temperatures.

According to NBC 4 Meteorologist Matt Ritter, there are no more details about the pending system, but forecasters should have a better idea how big, if at all, by midweek.

“Some computer models are predicting snow, others are predicting rain, and others are predicting no storm at all,” he said in his noon forecast on Sunday, as flurries began to fall gently on the area.

“But we will be watching the trends over the coming days as everything comes into better focus.”

So far the Greater D.C. region has seen none of the white stuff.  However, in  November, the weather team predicted more snow than 2015’s winter blast.

“What we’re predicting in the D.C. metro area is above average,” NBC Washington Chief Meteorologist Doug Kammerer told WTOP about this season’s Storm Team 4 winter forecast.

“Normally we get about 15 inches a year, and we’re going for 20 to 25 inches of snowfall,” he says.

No doubt area school children are hoping he is right.
