WASHINGTON — The giant panda cub at the National Zoo already has a name. It’s Bei Bei.
It’s tradition for giant pandas to not get names until they are 100 days old, but the National Zoo named the panda early since the Chinese President is in town.
Bei Bei, which means “precious, treasure,” was born on Aug. 22.
The name was picked by first lady Michelle Obama and Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan.
The names were suggested by keepers at the National Zoo and from the panda conservation park in China.
