WASHINGTON —  There was an emotional search in the Winchester, Virginia, area Friday night for a hit-and-run driver who left a 15-year-old boy dead on his way to school, ABC 7 reports.

Tristan Long, a sophomore at James Wood High School, was struck and killed along Rest Church Road in Clearbrook around 7 a.m. He was about a block from home and on his way to catch a school bus.

“He had been hit in the road and they just left him laying there,” Long said. “He just left my baby. He’s 15 years old. They just left him there,” Lori Long, the mother of the struck teen, told ABC 7. She says her son had missed his regular bus and she believes he was walking or running to catch a second bus when a car hit him from behind.

Orange markings remain at the scene to show where the 15-year-old was hit as police investigators try to find the car that hit Long.

Virginia State Police say a Volkswagen Beetle struck the boy and kept on going and that the striking vehicle is a 2000 to 2010 model, with front-end damage to the left or driver’s side.  But  investigators are still trying to determine the vehicle make, model or color.

Anyone with information about the car or the crash is asked to police at 540-662-3313 or 540-829-7771.
