How much could you buy with the $500M Powerball jackpot?

You could easily buy the most expensive homes in each jurisdiction of the DMV – 3150 South St. NW, #2A, in D.C., is going for a mere $13.95 million, Zillow says, while 1005 Founders Ridge Lane, in McLean, Virginia, is listed at $12.5 million, and 9300 River Road, in Potomac, is going for $14 million. If you’ve had your fill of civilization, you might be thinking about buying your own private island. Not only can you buy Blakely Island, the most expensive private island in the U.S. according to Trulia; you could buy the whole top six. (AP Photo/Alastair Grant)
You can’t quite buy the Washington Capitals — they’re valued at $565 million, Forbes says. But surely you can find a partner for the last bit? You could go halves with another Powerball winner for the Wizards, valued at $900 million. Or you could settle for the Dallas Stars. As for NFL and MLB teams, especially the Redskins and Nationals, don’t even: Even at $450 mil, you’re still a piker. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)

WASHINGTON — The Powerball jackpot is up to $500 million in advance of Wednesday’s drawing. How much is that? A lot. A whole lot.

You could buy the world’s most expensive car; the world’s most expensive jewel; the most expensive house in each of the District, Maryland and Virginia, AND the six most expensive private islands in the U.S. And you’d have barely burned through a quarter of it.

You’d still have to pinch pennies if you were looking for a sports team to buy, though.
