WASHINGTON — Nathan Eric Flynn, the first firefighter in the history of Howard County’s Department of Fire and Rescue Services to die in the line of duty, is being laid to rest Saturday.
Shortly before 2 a.m. on Monday morning, Flynn’s department responded to a fire in a Clarksville, Maryland, home. On his way into the burning building, Flynn — a 13-year veteran of the department — fell through the floor into the basement.
When his fellow firefighters managed to reach him after about 20 minutes, Flynn was unconscious. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries a few hours later.
A GoFundMe page has been created to help Flynn’s wife and children. The fund was started by the Local 2000 chapter of the International Association of Firefighters, and it raised more than $50,000 in its first day online.
Flynn’s funeral is taking place at Mountain Christian Church in Joppa, Maryland.
