Ellicott City relief concert benefits recovery efforts

Days after the devastating flood, business owners and county officials reported solid progress Wednesday with the cleanup in Ellicott City. But a firsthand view of the damage shows that there's much work ahead and it is still unclear when Main Street can reopen. (WTOP/Dick Uliano)

COLUMBIA, Md. — A fundraiser for Ellicott City residents and business owners affected by the severe flooding is bringing together supporters from across the region.

The event, called Party in the Pit, will be held at the Merriweather Post Pavilion Monday, June 11, from 5 to 10 p.m. It’s already raised more than $60,000 to go toward recovery efforts. Organizer Robert Gillette said the event will give those who were affected by flooding a chance to connect and enjoy the night.

There will be free entry and free food for Ellicott City residents who have their credentials at the entrance. Tickets are $25 at the door; VIP tickets are $125.

The Doug Segree Band and Misspent Youth will perform. Donations have poured in from corporate sponsors.

In honor of Eddie Hermond, the Airforce veteran and National Guardsman who lost his life during the flooding, five percent of the proceeds from the event will also be set aside for the Eddison Hermond Memorial Scholarship Fund, established by the Maryland Restaurant Association.

“This is another opportunity for people to thank him,” said Gillette.

All of the volunteers at the event will be servicemen and women — a tribute to Hermond’s life and the community.
