WASHINGTON — The search is underway for a new Howard County sheriff.
An interim sheriff is in place after former Sheriff James Fitzgerald resigned under pressure following a county investigation critical of his management.
Lt. Don Knott is serving as interim sheriff, and County Executive Alan Kittleman has told WBAL-TV Knott hopes to help the healing process begin. A yearlong investigation found that Fitzgerald used racist language, manipulated the work schedule and bullied some employees.
It’s up to Gov. Larry Hogan to appoint a sheriff, who would hold the position until voters choose someone in the 2018 election.
Kittleman hopes to have the job filled by next month.
