WASHINGTON — A reward of up to $2,000 is being offered for information about the hit-and-run driver who killed a U.S. Marine Sept. 29 in Frederick County, Maryland.
Cpl. William Ferrell, 21, had pulled over in a rainstorm to help a stranded driver on the northbound side of Route 15 in Thurmont. He was hit and killed at around 11 p.m.
“While he was trying to do a good deed, he got struck by a vehicle,” says Earl Winterling, chairman of Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland, the group offering the cash reward.
The Maryland state police describe the vehicle that hit Ferrell as a semi or large pickup truck that was towing a car-hauling trailer. The vehicle likely has damage on its right side, investigators say.
Witnesses told police that the driver stopped briefly after the crash and then left the scene.
“You’ve got an individual that’s laying on the ground and needs emergency help. Just to take off from the crime — that’s horrific,” Winterling says.
Ferrell was from Carthage, North Carolina, and was assigned to the Naval Support Facility in Thurmont.
Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland urges anyone with information to contact 1-866-7-LOCKUP or submit a tip by texting “MCS” plus your message to CRIMES (274637).
