Fairfax city’s Amazon Fresh store is one step closer to opening

Fairfax city’s upcoming Amazon Fresh store isn’t open yet, but the Amazon.com Inc. grocery store is getting there.

“We saw the sign go up today and we’re very excited,” said Chris Bruno, the city’s director of economic development. “It will be a great addition to that activity center.”

The grocery store is slated to open at the Point 50 shopping center owned by Regency Centers Corp. (NASDAQ: REG) in a nearly 30,000-square-foot storefront at 10360 Fairfax Blvd. Several city government offices are also slated to move into the development, Bruno said.

The storefront’s remodeling and conversion to a full-size Amazon grocery store started in June, according to plans obtained from Construction Journal. The space was originally slated to be a 365 by Whole Foods Market store before Amazon bought Whole Foods.

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) declined to comment.
