WASHINGTON — Gunshots fired into the same Herndon home twice in the span of three days narrowly missed a young girl who lives there.
Fairfax County police are investigating whether the bullets fired into the home in the 2100 block of Monaghan Drive on July 5 and 8 have forensic similarities.
Detectives are trying to determine whether the current or former residents might have been the target of the shots.
The gunfire from the first incident went through a bedroom window, nearly hitting a 7-year-old girl who had heard a loud noise.
“I didn’t know what was it. And then I told my mom, and she said maybe it’s fireworks,” the girl told NBC Washington.
Instead, a bullet had burst through the window, lodging in her mattress.
The girl received small cuts to one arm from broken glass, but was shaken, saying she didn’t want to sleep in her bed anymore, “because I’m not sure if it’s going to happen again.”
Three days later, another bullet entered the home, hitting a kitchen wall. Other bullet holes were located outside.
Residents who live nearby said they were concerned about the gunfire in a neighborhood with many children.
Nobody was hit in either of the incidents.
Shell casings were found in a nearby yard, NBC Washington reported. The evidence is being processed to help determine whether the cases are related.
Family members told NBC Washington they intend to move, regardless.
