WASHINGTON — A Fairfax County 7-year-old died after drowning in her neighborhood pool over the Memorial Day weekend.
Seven-year-old Fatmata Kamara — or Effey as she’s called by family — didn’t know how to swim, but somehow ended up in the water at the Lorton Station community pool at about 4 p.m. Monday, reports NBC Washington. Her parents say she went to the pool with friends.
Two mothers at the pool helped a lifeguard pull Kamara from the water and CPR was performed, NBC Washington reports.
“They tried, they did their best, but it wasn’t enough,” Kamara’s mother, Aminata Porter, said to NBC Washington.
Emergency crews transported her to the hospital where she later died.
Police say the drowning doesn’t appear suspicious. Pool staff is investigating, NBC Washington reports.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family with funeral expenses.
