Jim Nabors, who played Gomer Pyle on ‘The Andy Griffith Show,’ dies at 87

WASHINGTON — Television actor Jim Nabors has died at age 87.

Nabors was best known for his role as Gomer Pyle on “The Andy Griffith Show,” playing a simple-minded auto mechanic who was occasionally deputized by Barney Fife.

Delivering such famous catchphrases as “golly,” “shazam” and “surprise, surprise, surprise,” he became so popular that he got his own spin-off “Gomer Pyle: USMC.”

In 1970, Nibors earned a Golden Globe nomination for “The Jim Nabors Hour.”

In 1978, he earned an Emmy nomination for hosting “The Jim Nabors Show” (1978).

He received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1991.
