WASHINGTON — Those familiar with the Comedy Central show “Key & Peele” know one of their best bits: Obama and his “anger translator” Luther. Obama gives his staid fireside chat, while Luther translates the frustrated, sarcastic screed in Obama’s head.
Obama embraced his alter-egos in full measure at Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, welcoming Luther (comedian Keegan-Michael Key) as himself (played on the show by Jordan Peele). Keeping the straight face required to pull this off, Obama rolled through a number of proud moments in democracy, while Luther provided the rant — on everything from Fox News and CNN fear mongering, to climate change — jabbing and gesticulating all the way. At one point he referred to Hillary Clinton as “Khaleesi,” the mother of dragons on “Game of Thrones,” and the water shortage problem in California, charging, “ya’ll think Bradley Cooper came here because he wants to talk to Chuck Todd? He needed a glass of water!”
After which Obama, increasingly agitated over Republicans and the climate change issue, led Luther to exclaim, “With all due respect, sir? You don’t need an anger translator. You need counseling.”
