WASHINGTON — D.C. police have arrested a former Uber driver wanted for an attempted sexual assault that happened last month, just blocks away from the U.S. Capitol.

Police said Selvin Danilo Chocooj, 32, of Oxon Hill, Maryland, was arrested Wednesday and charged with assault with intent to commit first-degree sexual abuse. Police have been looking for him since December.

Around 4 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017, police said Chocooj was giving a female passenger a ride when he parked in the 400 block of East Capitol Street Southeast. He then tried to sexually assault her. The woman previously told police the driver had tried to take off her pants. She said when she yelled, he punched and strangled her before she managed to get away.

She was treated at a hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening. Chocooj drove away.

Uber removed Chocooj from its service when police alerted the company about the alleged sexual assault, an Uber spokesperson previously told NBC Washington.
