WASHINGTON — The bicyclist who fatally struck a woman as she was crossing the street in downtown D.C. has been cited for a traffic violation, and the police are working with the United States Attorney’s Office to determine whether they should bring criminal charges.
The D.C. police said Thursday that 27-year-old Zakkai Kauffman-Rogoff was issued a notice of infraction for disobeying a traffic device in the March 9 crash. Kiplinger magazine senior editor Jane Bennett Clark, 65, who died a day later.
Bennett Clark had been walking to the Metro Center station from her office on 13th Street, in Northwest near Franklin Square, when she was hit by Kauffman-Rogoff and fell to the ground.
He remained at the scene until authorities arrived.
Emergency personnel took Bennett Clark to a hospital, where she died from her injuries the next day.
Bennett Clark wrote about personal finance and retirement.
Kauffman-Rogoff’s lawyer told The Washington Post that his client “denies culpability in this unfortunate event, and that he has cooperated and will continue to cooperate with the investigation.”
The police haven’t released a full report yet.
