WASHINGTON — A security officer was shot and killed late Thursday night while he was working in Southeast Washington.
D.C. Police said 29-year-old Evan Williams of Upper Marlboro was traveling east on Atlantic Street SE around 11 p.m. when he was shot. He was on duty at the time and was returning to his job site.
Williams was able to make it to a firehouse down the street where he sought help. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.
Another man was also shot, but he is expected to survive.
Police do not believe Williams was the intended target.
Residents in the 4000 block of 3rd Street SE said a new security firm has taken over protecting several apartment complexes in the neighborhood over the past few months and tension has been growing between some residents and some of the officers.
Police are asking for any information that can help their investigation.
