Police ID man killed in shooting behind Northwest DC rec center

WASHINGTON — D.C. police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 45-year-old man Monday behind a Georgia Avenue recreation center in Northwest.

Police on Tuesday identified the man as Donald Stephen Johnson Jr.

Police responded to the sound of gunfire in the 5700 block of Georgia Ave around 7:10 p.m. on Monday. Police located Johnson behind the Emery Recreation Center where he was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the police report. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The police report lists home addresses in Mitchellville, Maryland, and Bowie, Maryland, for Johnson.

Late last month, one person was shot and wounded in the 5300 block of Georgia Avenue NW. Earlier that month, police investigated a shooting in the 5200 block that involved an off-duty D.C. officer.

Police are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information about Johnson’s shooting that leads to a conviction. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at 202-727-9099.
