Delaying retirement
Many Americans remain in the workforce during their 60s. Just over a quarter (26.2 percent) of adults age 60 and older were employed in the U.S. between 2010 and 2014, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. However, in a few cities, over a third of older adults are continuing to work. Here’s a look at the 10 U.S. cities that have the biggest proportion of employed people age 60 and beyond.
Glenwood Springs, Colorado
In the small resort town of Glenwood Springs, 40.7 percent of people age 60 and older are employed. Tourism is a major part of the town’s economy, with several ski resorts and hot springs drawing many people to the town. The area is also the headquarters of the Colorado Mountain College system.
Elko, Nevada
Elko is famous for its gold mines, which draw many visitors to the area. Many of this desert community’s largest employers are casinos. Elko is also home to Great Basin College. Some 38.2 percent of people age 60 and older remain in the workforce, according to Census Bureau data.
Lawrence, Kansas
Lawrence is a college town that centers around the University of Kansas, which is the largest employer in the area. The area is friendly to older workers, with 36.9 percent of people age 60 and older holding jobs.
Greenfield, Massachusetts
A medical center and a community college are the biggest employers in the small town of Greenfield. Over a third (36.4 percent) of people age 60 and older continue to work.
Iowa City, Iowa
The top employer in Iowa City is the University of Iowa and its hospitals and clinics. Other major employers include the ACT testing company, Pearson Education, the Hy-Vee supermarket chain and several hospitals and medical centers. Some 36.3 percent of people age 60 and older are employed, according to Census Bureau data.
Anchorage, Alaska
In Alaska’s most populated city, 36.2 percent of people age 60 and older are employed. Major employers include oil and gas companies, the military and several superstore chains.
Washington, D.C.
The federal government is the top employer in the Washington, D.C. area, which includes Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia, and some parts of Maryland and West Virginia. Many of these jobs are filled by older workers, and 36.1 percent of people age 60 and older are employed.
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Over a third (35.9 percent) of people age 60 and older are employed in Sioux Falls. Major employers include the meat processing firm John Morrell & Co., several financial services firms including Wells Fargo and Citi, the Hy-Vee supermarket chain and several health care centers.
Kearney, Nebraska
The largest employers in this small city are the University of Nebraska at Kearney and CHI Health Good Samaritan hospital. Many people remain employed during their retirement years, with 35.5 percent of the age 60 and older population still working, according to Census Bureau data.
Burlington, Vermont
The Burlington area, which includes South Burlington, is the home of the University of Vermont, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Bruegger’s Bagels and the Vermont Teddy Bear Company. Over a third (35.3 percent) of older adults in the area are employed.
