How did $32K in cash sit in a D.C. schools’ athletics office for months?

WASHINGTON — More than $32,000 worth of cash sat uncounted for months in the office of a D.C. Public Schools athletics administrator who resigned late last year, NBC Washington reports.

Former DCPS Athletic Director Stephanie Evans, who resigned in December after questions were raised about her management of money, is accused of “gross negligence” in her handling of the school district’s money and inappropriate expenses from funds intended to help students.

The school district’s internal audit of the former athletic director reveals a series of violations and raises questions about whether money earned by selling tickets to sporting events was wasted, lost or misspent. The audit does not reference her by name, but it reportedly details of Evan’s financial practices.
