WASHINGTON — D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on Tuesday reaffirmed her support for Police Chief Cathy Lanier, who has come under fire during the summer spike in violent crime.
A day earlier, the police union announced its members had given the chief a vote of no confidence in an informal poll.
That was taken around the time officers were deployed for “all hands on deck,” a strategy not always popular with the rank-and-file who had to adjust their schedules.
“I think Chief Lanier is a great chief,” Bowser said on her way out of a discussion on homelessness.
“She knows this city like few others do, and I know that she’s going to provide the leadership we need to get through the spike in crime that we’re experiencing,” she says.
As of Tuesday evening, the District had recorded 105 homicides, 44 percent more than last year at this time.
