WASHINGTON — Police are investigating what happened at a crowded D.C. playground Tuesday when witnesses say someone fired a gun in broad daylight.
The incident happened around noon at the Columbia Heights Community Center on Girard Street Northwest. NBC Washington reports no one was hurt, and police are still looking for the person who fired a gun.
Witnesses told NBC Washington a young man ran through the playground with a gun, and began firing at people who were in an alley.
“This is supposed to be our fun, happy space, not somewhere where you’re running, shielding children from bullets,” a mother who was at the playground at the time told NBC Washington.
The community center remained closed for the rest of Tuesday, but was set to reopen Wednesday, according to the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation.
Columbia Heights Comm Ctr remains closed due to an earlier @DCPoliceDept incident. Site will reopen on Wed., July 8. http://t.co/KXdYlz7J8L
