WASHINGTON (AP) — A man charged with killing a passenger aboard a Metro train on Independence Day will undergo a mental health screening to determine whether he is competent to stand trial.
A judge ordered the evaluation Friday during a hearing in which 18-year-old Jasper Spires was also ordered held in jail. He has been charged with killing 24-year-old Kevin Joseph Sutherland aboard a red line train.
A police detective who testified in court Friday said police believe Spires tried to take Sutherland’s cell phone and they struggled before Sutherland was stabbed.
Spires’ attorney argued in court that his client was misidentified as the man who stabbed Sutherland. Spires is to return to court Aug. 28.
