Man accused of calling in false threats to Metro stays behind bars

WASHINGTON — A mental evaluation has been ordered for an MTV show star accused of calling in several threats against Metro.

Jerez Stone-Coleman, 19, of Southeast D.C. appeared in United States District Court in D.C. for a detention hearing Thursday. Attorneys for Stone-Coleman want him released from jail ahead of trial. Prosecutors call him a danger to the community and want him to stay behind bars.

After an evaluation of Stone-Coleman earlier in the week he was found ineligible for supervised release.

In a short detention hearing Thursday, the judge met with attorneys on both side and then ordered that a mental evaluation be done on Stone-Coleman. The findings of that exam are expected to be presented during a detention hearing, Friday afternoon. The judge will then decide what is next for Stone-Coleman as he awaits trial.

Stone-Coleman, who appeared in the MTV show “Catfish”, was indicted on 11 felony counts for calls that came into 911 starting in December of 2014. Metro transit police say the calls included bomb threats and threats of violence against Metro buses and trains. In one instance a call investigators say came from Stone-Coleman spoke of an ambush on President Barack Obama’s motorcade.

He has only been charged with 11 false threat calls, but prosecutors say investigators are examining 338 calls made to D.C.’s 911 system from a cell phone used in six of the calls Stone-Coleman faces charges for.

Many of the incidents resulted in an emergency response and Metro stations being temporarily closed.
