WASHINGTON – Questions remain after a Metro Transit officer shot and killed a man who was in a tunnel near the Potomac Avenue Station.

Police have not released the name of the man who was killed nor have investigators said whether he was armed or what led to the shooting Thursday night.

Metro Transit Police has also not named the officer involved. However the police agency says she is on paid administrative leave and that she has more than 10 years of service with Metro Transit Police.

Police say the officer encountered the man in the westbound tunnel about 400 feet away from the station, which serves the Orange, Blue and Silver lines.

The operator of a Blue Line train first spotted the man about 8:50 p.m. between the Stadium-Armory and Potomac stations. Police responded soon after and began searching the tunnels.

D.C. police are investigating the shooting.
