WASHINGTON — As traffic backups begin at Reagan National Airport this week, Uber and Lyft riders are facing yet another switch in where they are picked up or dropped off.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority had moved Terminal B/C Uber and Lyft pickups to the upper, ticketing level ahead of lane closures, but said Tuesday that the traffic from the ride hailing services — regular drop offs — and the shuttles that are now serving the upper level had become too much.
Next week, the airports authority will be closing the two entrances at either end of the terminal on the upper level.
To address the potential extra crowding on the lower level, Uber and Lyft drivers will be allowed to use the lower level lanes normally reserved for taxis. Uber and Lyft will pick up in the middle of the terminal, with cabs picking up on either end.
The first major construction delays for other drivers dropping off or picking up people on the lower level roadway are due to start this week.
At the busiest times, the backups could stretch around the airport and even out onto the George Washington Parkway.
