WASHINGTON — Beach Drive commuters will once again have to find an alternate route on Monday morning as the next stretch of the park service road closes for reconstruction.
The road will close just after 12 a.m. Monday between Park Road/Tilden Street and Joyce Road Northwest, which is south of Military Road Northwest, the National Park Service said.
Ross Drive and Ridge Road will also be closed to vehicle traffic, however pedestrians and bicycle traffic will be able to use these roads while Beach Drive is reconstructed.
But after a year of construction, a newly rebuilt section of Beach Drive south of Park Road/Tilden Street and stretching to Rock Creek Parkway will reopen to traffic on Monday morning. The freshly rebuilt segment will open once the next construction zone has been closed, according to the park service.
The next section of construction will reopen in phases. A less than half-mile portion of the road between Park Road/Tilden Street and Broad Branch Road will reopen in four to six months. The remaining 1.59-mil stretch of Beach Drive will remain closed to traffic until next fall.
Drivers can take Connecticut Avenue and 16th Street NW as an alternate route.
