Rockville Pike intersection road work completed

WASHINGTON — Road work has been completed on an improvement project intended to improve traffic at a major local intersection.

The Maryland State Highway Administration announced on Monday that work has been completed on the intersection of Md. 355 and Cedar Lane and West Cedar Lane, in Bethesda, just north of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

The highway administration said in a statement that the project included adding a lane to Md. 355 (Rockville Pike) in each direction south of Cedar Lane; widening Cedar Lane to make a separate through and left turn lane, and widening West Cedar Lane to build a right turn lane.

Crews also built an entrance for the Stone Ridge School along Rockville Pike and Cedar Lane, installed Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalks and ramps, and put in new traffic signals.

The project cost $16.1 million, and was part of a Base Realignment and Closure-related projects near military installations.

“Thanks to area commuters, residents and businesses for their patience during construction,” SHA Administrator Gregory Johnson said in the statement.

More than 62,000 vehicles a day travel on the affected section of Rockville Pike, the highway administration said.

They added that fence installation will continue for the next few months, and landscaping work will happen over the spring.
