Metro begins to retire oldest railcars

WASHINGTON — Metro retired one of its oldest railcars that was still able to run in passenger service for the first time in the system’s 40-year history Tuesday.

The original cars, called the 1000 Series, are not safe in crashes and federal safety investigators have been urging Metro to stop using them since the 2009 fatal Red Line derailment.

Metro is also in the process of bringing in more of the new 7000 Series cars so that it can retire the oldest cars in the fleet.
