WASHINGTON — Hiring companies to do spring cleaning can include hidden costs if you don’t ask the right questions.
Particularly when dealing with carpet cleaning companies and window washers, Washington Consumers’ Checkbook definitely recommends getting specifics on what work will entail for what cost.
“If your window has muntin on it, [and] it’s split up into six panes, they’re going to charge you for six panes. If you want the insides cleaned and the outsides cleaned, they’re going to charge you per pane, per side,” says Kevin Brasler, executive editor at Checkbook.org.
Most window washing companies also will not touch frames or window sills unless that’s specifically part of the bargain.
Other recommendations involving window washing companies include:
- Note the number of windows to be cleaned on each floor and ones that might require a ladder.
- Make sure the company has general liability and worker’s compensation insurance.
- Get a written estimate and specify whether you want storm windows cleaned.
- Inspect the work immediately to raise potential issues before the cleaners leave.

As for carpet cleaners, Brasler warns that products such as soil retardants and deodorizers can double the cost of cleaning with some companies, while other companies might include them free.
The method a carpet cleaning company uses can make a huge difference in how well the work is done.
“You really want to use a company that uses truck-mounted hot-water extraction equipment,” Brasler says.
Other recommendations involving carpets include:
- Don’t pay until you’ve walked around the carpet to inspect the work. Yes, it’s okay to walk on it.
- Ask for a written guarantee that at the very least includes a re-do if you’re not happy.
- Before the work begins point out stains, how they were caused and how old they are.
- Ask the company to tell you beforehand if it can’t guarantee some stains will be removed.
- If you discover issues after workers leave, call to inform the company immediately.

Rug cleaning is another job that can end with less-than-desired results.
“You want to make sure that you hire a company that uses an immersion method,” Brasler says.
Also, some rug cleaners don’t do the work themselves: They collect and ship out rugs to be cleaned elsewhere.
“You may as well deal directly with the company that’s doing the work,” Brasler adds.
