Car Report: The 2015 Mustang GT goes to finishing school, comes out a sophisticated pony

(1/6)

WASHINGTON– When I say Mustang you might think a fast, but not particularly refined car prowling the streets. Previously, the older technology for the rear suspension hurt the car’s time on the track when the road got twisty. New for 2015, Ford has given the new Mustang an independent rear suspension which helps with handling. It doesn’t get upset with bumps in a corner any longer.

The new suspension is a great step forward, but the outside got an upgrade as well. The 2015 Mustang sports a more modern look with a touch of retro here and there.  It still looks like a Mustang at first glance, but the styling is more sleek and aerodynamic– especially when you park next to another older Mustang. The 2015 Mustang looks more like a fastback design. I really like the look of the new Ford. Large optional 20-inch wheels really set the GT apart and are worth the $1,295 it costs to look a little different than other Mustangs.

The updated design of the inside is also a big surprise. The materials are a step up from previous Mustangs and nicer than the Camaro from arch enemy GM, at least until the new one hits the market soon. $1,595 leather Recaro front seats are a worthy option. They hold you in place and are pretty comfortable for such a racy looking seat.  There’s not much rear seat room but a kid in the car seat had no problem with space. I wouldn’t ride back there for a long trip. This Mustang has some tech gear – something you don’t see in a pony car. It includes technology like adaptive cruise control, reverse parking assist and a voice activated NAV system.

The improved interior does come at a cost. The Mustang GT Premium has a starting price of around $36,000. With all the options, my tester stickered over $44,000. But you do get a five liter V8 with 435 horsepower and a manual transmission –the way it should be. You can choose an automatic, if you must.

There is plenty of power from the high revving V8 and a relatively smooth shifting six-speed manual. The Mustang performs OK in terms of a daily ride. It’s a bit stiffer than a normal car but I never felt beat up by the ride. Don’t expect many miles from a tank of gas. I managed 16mpg over and emptied the tank in just 160 miles of mixed driving. Escaping the normal commute and exploring back roads is where this new Mustang excels. It feels confident on less than stellar roads. Another neat item is the Line Lock system which helps with the perfect burnout.  Make sure you don’t do it on public roads.

Ford’s redesigned 2015 Mustang takes the car to the next level. Gone is the old school suspension and interior of past Mustangs. This is a pleasant surprise with a nice sounding V8. This new ride handles well and has a more modern look and feel. Yet it’s still a Mustang through and through. Ford has made a car for the faithful and for people who like me who didn’t really consider one before.
