After just one year on the job, National Geographic Society President and CEO Tracy Wolstencroft will be stepping down at the start of next month.
Wolstencroft, who announced his departure internally in July and will step down Oct. 1, will continue to serve on the society’s board of trustees, a role he’s held since 2008 and said he wants to focus more on going forward. He was named the society’s CEO in September 2018.
Michael Ulica, executive vice president and chief operating and financial officer, has been promoted to president and will assume day-to-day responsibilities Oct. 1 as well.
Ulica, a 20-year veteran and former executive at Discovery Inc. and Time Life Inc., had stepped in as interim president and CEO when Wolstencroft’s predecessor, Gary Knell, had moved on in March 2018 to become chief executive of National Geographic Partners — a joint venture between the society and then-21st Century Fox, now a part of Walt Disney Co.
