WASHINGTON — Discount grocer Lidl, which has opened several stores in the D.C. area as part of its North American debut, gets props not only for the beer it stocks, but also for the private-label beers it makes.
The New York International Beer Competition has named Lidl its “2018 Beer Supermarket of the Year.”
Lidl also won 11 medals for its exclusive private-label beers at the competition, competing against more than 600 submissions from around the globe and beating out beers from popular national brands such as Samuel Adams.
Lidl’s Belgian Style Tripel Bronzen Schild won a Double Gold medal in the annual International Beer Competition. Its Brewer’s Storehouse No. 3 was named Amber Ale Beer of the Year.
Lidl was also awarded five silver medals and three bronze medals, including honors for its American Style Pale Ale, Brewer’s Storehouse No.7 Pale and, in the Experimental Beer category, for its The Ginger Grizzly Alcoholic Ginger Soda.
Lidl would like shoppers to try its award-winners: Several of them will be 20 percent off in stores through Wednesday.
Lidl has opened D.C.-area stores in Woodbridge, Ashburn and Manassas, with others coming.
The German company, with thousands of stores in Europe, also opened its North American headquarters in Crystal City in 2015 as a base for its planned East Coast expansion.
