Screened Lyft drivers get access to Fort Meade

WASHINGTON — The thousands of people who live on restricted Fort Meade will have access to ride-hailing service Lyft starting next month under an arrangement with the Department of Defense.

Lyft is currently recruiting and training drivers who will be specifically certified to provide rides on base at Fort Meade, and only fully-vetted and approved Lyft drivers will be given credentials for base access.

It opens the door to a big potential pool of riders.

More than 12,000 people live on base, and more than 40,000 commute to Fort Meade each day.

Those living on and commuting to military installations like Fort Meade have fewer transportation options because of limited access and security requirements.

“This new service will help Fort Meade’s service members, civilians and their family members by providing another safe, reliable, door-to-door transportation option on Fort Meade and in the surrounding community,” said Lt. Col. Allan Floyud, Fort Meade’s Deputy Garrison Commander-Transformation.

The addition of Fort Meade follows Lyft’s military base pilot program at Camp Pendleton in California, the Marine Corps’ largest West Coast training facility.
