A pizza history: Pizza Hut turns 60, marks its milestones

WASHINGTON — Two brothers, Frank and Dan Carney, opened the first Pizza Hut on May 31, 1958, in Wichita, Kansas, with $600 they borrowed from their mother.

Today, there almost 17,000 Pizza Hut locations in more than 100 countries.

Pizza Hut has listed some of their notable accomplishments:

  • The first pizza ever delivered to the White House was a Pizza Hut Pizza. It was ordered by Barbara Bush in 1989.
  • In 1994, a Pizza Hut pizza became the first physical good ever purchased over the internet. It was also the first company to send a pizza into space, sending an order to the International Space Station in 2001, the longest pizza delivery in history.
  • In 2016, Pizza Hut used a team of professional hikers to deliver a pizza to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, a world record for the highest pizza delivery.
  • Pizza Hut is now the official pizza of the National Football League after Papa John’s ended its long-standing relationship as the NFL’s top pizza sponsor.
